An interesting question in modern world where the internet plays an pivotal part of everyday life, business and society! Let’s examine what is the impact on life without internet?
Well, first we should ask the question in more specific circumstances. What would life be like without the internet if the 'plug' was pulled today? Rather than trying to imagine a world without the internet, we would have explored this, looking at the subject from this angle.
There is a complex question of how exactly the Internet can pull the plug due to the extended infrastructure created by the Internet. It will probably need to shut down every server and local DNS in the world. Some people have talked about the big virus infections spread by all servers and computers, providing them / the internet in a paralyzed state. There is also another wild principle where the wind will disrupt anything produced by huge solar flares that carry current from telegraph wires, anything metal, computers, servers, etc.
Life without the Internet - individual users
How will the lack of internet affect the average individual user? Every teenager screams except that they can’t log in to Facebook, it all comes down to how much we personally use the internet and for that. Some of us rarely use the internet, where others live life around it! Similarly some people who use Second Life live a completely new life within the Internet.
I asked a few people their initial feelings about not having the internet, they said it’s here;
"A lot of people uses internet and if someone pulled the plug off internet, everyone would complain about it and ultimately they situation is nothing less than chaos"- Marie– 16
"Well, In my opinion people would have start talking to each other like old days and morning chat would be back at the post office fees. People switched back to letters instead of emails."- Dories – 28
"It will cost me lot at work because in our office most of the work are facilitated by internet and computers, going back to old days means you just have to sort out thing manually, and it cost a whole day."- Debbie – 45
"Boring life! No shop online, no chatting, internet really helps a lot of people like me who find it difficult to get around" -Synthia - 60+
Socializing - Can our youth socialize without the internet?
Many of us use the internet to communicate, especially in parentheses under the age of 10. Our demands for social communication and networking on the Internet are huge, from email to chat forums, social networks, dating sites and even to virtual worlds. So it’s easy to expect that life without the internet will force people to go back to grass roots and socialize and communicate at a very basic level. However with this my concern, especially the people around the inside of the lower age bracket who have grown up with the internet around them, will be able to accept social engagement at the grass root level and know how to socialize? Will this further enhance communication skills and language in relation to the study of how ‘Internet slang’ has merged into our language skills? Our ability to meet new people outside of our immediate area will be broken and so we will talk about who we meet, who we interact with and with whom we spend our lives. How did you meet your spouse? Was the Internet involved in the process?
Life without internet – communication
We use the Internet to communicate more than ever before and it has become an integral part of any standard means of communication. So without the internet, we have to adapt our means of communication. I highly doubt we will send smoke cues, but the letters will fill in the gaps left by e-mails and the phone will fill in the gaps created by instant messaging, chat and social media. The increase in posted mail and phone calls will definitely benefit our local postal services and telephone network providers, but the communication we wanted about the internet was free! So, suppose it is an exaggeration to say that we will break down all pens and paper, start licking stamps and we will call everyone we know. Next we will probably resort to the basics, which are to stay free and just ‘talk’ with friends and family.
Life Speed No Broadband Speed! Slow down
It is a simple observation that the internet has accelerated the world and we live. We communicate faster, we can buy and sell faster, and we can get information more quickly. So with the dilemma of not having the internet, we expect the world, business, society and communications to slow down. Facing this big drop in the speed of the process will have an impact on the whole business and society and we will wonder how we coped without it.
Life without internet - effects on business
Nowadays almost all businesses have some connection with the internet, even if it is a simple business listing or store online store. How will the loss of the Internet affect businesses around the world? Maybe a global recession, stock markets will collapse, millions of businesses will be busted and millions will lose their jobs? Will businesses using the internet be greatly affected and the MAC or break factor if they can survive without it? But this destruction may have some advantages; As customers we will probably start buying loc locally, enriching our local towns and shops. We will seek local services and sustain the local economy by trading in areas close to us. The loss of jobs related to internet business will be difficult to digest. There are many other jobs that have no direct connection with the internet, in addition to the sudden high demand for jobs in our local supermarket.
What businesses can survive?
Many large businesses ‘accept’ the Internet and have not only found their existence around it, so we will still be able to find a good number of businesses in terms of business. They used the Internet only as an advertising medium or as an additional virtual shop. As long as they have diversity and a strong customer base they will adapt in any way they need to keep the business going.
Decrease in information and resources
We all know that the internet is a huge source directory, full of useful and useless information, all beautiful at the fingertips. So without that, would we be able to find the chemical compound of silver, or the world record time of eating after eight? Books! Quite simply, we will resort to the old school principle of reading books from libraries. Finding the same information that the Internet can provide in your local library will certainly be difficult but if you think about it, the Internet basically takes the concept of a library and expands about a million times!
Life without the Internet – Conclusion
We need to remember where we are today without the Internet. The Internet was a technological advancement that made us great in the 21st century and we changed the way we socialize, business and buy goods. It has paved the way for the future and there are still many exciting advances ahead of itself. Witnessing the loss of the Internet is probably very likely, but in one way or another I am convinced that as human beings we will adapt and live as we have for thousands of years. Those who have grown up with the well-established internet around them cannot understand life without it. However there are many of us who have lived prematurely and experienced life without the internet.
