Space Myths We Believe True Due to Movies.

From ages, space has always mesmerized humans, this fascination also depicted in various ancient texts. Space has been the main stream subject of many films, especially of Hollywood. There is hardly anyone in the world who doesn’t know about movies like "Star Wars", "Star Trek" etc. These movies have been around a while, and have become a source for many space myths that people holds today. It’s to be said that, there is a big difference between people's beliefs and facts about space. Is the technology or scenes depicted in space movies really possible?

So let’s dig deep and try to evaluate the "spatial concepts" shown in such films on the basis of science.

Myth: Noises such as bomb blasts can be heard in space.

Fact: Almost all space films feature explosions. But since there is no air as a medium and no vibrating atom in space, sound molecules cannot migrate. Hence, no voice can be heard. If the sound of space were really heard on Earth, then sound generated by pulsar light fountains, collisions of spatial objects, black holes etc. would have made the Earth not habitable.

Fact: According to popular belief, a black hole can be compared to a space "garbage collector” and it can swallow space objects of any shape or size. It is a fact that black holes have tremendous gravitational force and their gravity is so powerful that even rays of light cannot escape from it. But a black hole cannot swallow objects larger than its size. Although a black hole can pull anything close to its event horizon, But it has no effect on objects outside it. Moreover, the size of a black hole's event horoscope is very small.

Myth: Weight is not felt in space.

Fact: Many people believe that there is no gravity in space so one can feel complete weightlessness. It is a fact that astronauts experience weightlessness, but only as long as they are in orbit of the Earth or a large spatial object like so. Once they out of this orbit they are always under the influence of gravity, even if that influence is very weak.

Myth: An “Asteroid Belt” between Mars and Jupiter is fatal.

Fact: Especially in "Star Wars" films, the protagonist of the film toils hard to moves his plane or spaceship through the middle of the belt, which looks thrilling on the cinema screen. But the reality is different. In fact, while passing through the asteroid belt, the chance of collision with any rock is one in a billion! The reason being that, asteroid belt is so vast and the small-to-large rocks are many miles apart. If the navigation of a spaceship or aircraft is assigned to a blind person, it is more likely that he will pass through the asteroid belt alive!
